Park Ranger (I)
Provides interpretation services that meet NPS-defined standards for success. Researches information to develop thematic interpretive programs designed to help the audience form their own connections to resource meanings and represent multiple points of view. Initiates informal visitor contacts to provide information and interpretation based on an assessment of individual visitor needs and cues. Presents interpretive programs at partner sites and in local communities. Develops and presents children's interpretive programs. Prepares written responses to information requests. Uses computers and software to prepare reports, complete administrative tasks, research, prepare, and present interpretive programs and to communicate via e-mail. Drafts interpretive text for social media, web site, and publications. Works independently and as part of a larger team to accomplish duties. Provides information, interpretation and watercraft skill instruction from a solo canoe or kayak. Nurtures relationships with park partners and private landowners to accomplish duties. Provides visitor education services to achieve compliance with rules regarding resource protection, safety, and appropriate behavior. Provides initial response to emergency situations, contacting emergency responders, and providing initial patient care to their current level of certification. Working conditions include independent operation of solo canoe or kayak on Class I-III rated river, lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds for short distances, standing or sitting for long periods of time, walking over rough terrain and uneven surfaces. Work occurs both indoors and outside with exposure to environmental hazards (river hazards, sun, heat, cold, biting insects, etc.). May operate both 2 and 4-wheel drive government vehicles over paved and unimproved roads. Driving may include towing and backing of trailers. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
You possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; deliver structured and informal presentations using various communication techniques to a variety of audiences; archeological or historical preservation research work involving presentations. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-4 grade level in the federal service. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
You do not have the specialized experience; however, you have four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of coursework in a related field. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.) IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE:
